Cardiff University in collaboration with UCL release an alpha version of Topologic software for creating topologically-connected three-dimensional conceptual building models

Cardiff, Wales, UK – 31 January 2019 – Cardiff University in collaboration with UCL announced today that they are releasing to the public an alpha version of their Topologic software for architects and engineers who want to create topologically-connected three-dimensional conceptual building models. Topologic is both a software development library and a plug-in for visual data flow applications. This alpha release (v. 0.8.0) specifically works with Autodesk© Dynamo. Topologic helps you think about your building not only as an assembly of physical components, but as a logical, spatial, and hierarchical configuration. Once you have built and connected a robust spatial model with Topologic, this can be interfaced with your choice of analysis and simulation engine. Topologic includes a software module, TopologicEnergy, that illustrates how you can connect Topologic to EnergyPlus and OpenStudio to analyse the thermal performance of a building.

Topologic is the result of a research project funded by the Leverhulme Trust (Project Number RPG2016-016), led by Dr. Wassim Jabi, in collaboration with Prof. Robert Aish (UCL), Dr. Simon Lannon, Dr. Aikaterini Chatzivasileiadi, and Dr. Nicholas Mario Wardhana. Dr. Wardhana holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science and is the software developer on the project. The software development work is being conducted at Cardiff University in collaboration with UCL. Topologic is based on initial research into the application of non-manifold topology to architectural modelling by Prof. Aish. TopologicEnergy is based on the DSOS software developed previously by Dr. Wassim Jabi.

In conjunction with Topologic, we are also announcing a new website, https://topologic.app, where you can learn more about the software, download the latest release, discuss Topologic in our user and developer forums, and submit defect reports.

Topologic is written in C++. TopologicDynamo is written in C++/CLI which is a .NET language. Topologic will be fully open sourced at the conclusion of the research project in late 2019. Topologic is free to use on commercial and non-commercial projects internally. If you wish to distribute or serve your Topologic-linked software to third parties outside your organisation, please consult the licensing terms on the software webpage and contact us for any clarification.
